Families affected by imprisonment

Date: 5-7pm on 21 February 2012

Venue: Royal Society of Edinburgh

Details: Families Outside will be hosting a special event to mark our 21st Birthday ‘coming of age’. For the first time, the four current and previous Chief Inspectors of Prisons in Scotland have agreed to come together for a retrospective discussion of their views and experiences. Alan Bishop CB, Clive Fairweather CBE, the Very Reverend Dr Andrew McLellan CBE and Brigadier Hugh Monro CBE will focus on families affected by imprisonment from 5-7pm on 21 February 2012 at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Spaces are strictly limited, though we hope to air the discussion via webcam.

Rock Trust Training: Relationships & Resilience: Tools for Change 

Date: 22nd February 2012

Details: This training will enable you to

  • Understand how Resilience, Transitions and Social Networks impact on the individuals using your services
  • Support service users to explore their social networks, improve social skills and develop positive relationships
  • Consider how their services can embed social networks practice in order to improve outcomes for individuals

This full day course is aimed at professionals and volunteers who work with people who have limited social networks. The course is also suitable for professionals who have short contact periods with people, enabling a first level assessment of potential issues.

Which way now? New directions in evidence based and gender informed practice

5th and 6th March 2012

 

The conference will explore our understanding of women’s offending and highlight the advances made by academic and practitioner researchers. It will feature presentations and workshops on key topics including:

  • Developing a theoretical perspective to underpin our practice that integrates  the evidence on reducing reoffending and desistance with an understanding of the role of gender
  • Recognising the needs of women who offend
  • Evidence-based and gender informed assessment
  • Explaining the onset and outcomes of offending and violent behaviour in girls
  • Assessing women who offend violently
  • Understanding women who sexually abuse.

Scottish Government and Local Authorities: Building strong and vibrant communities

Bringing together perspectives on risk to promote participation in adult support and protection

Date: Thursday, 15 March, 2012

Venue: The Trades Hall, 85 Glassford Street, Glasgow G1 1UH

Details: This workshop focuses on improving interaction between the person supported by services and the practitioner on the subject of risk. It draws on recent research, focused on adult support and protection, which highlighted the importance of improving practitioners’ understanding of how the person they support views their life and the harm they might be facing. The workshop will include a summary of research undertaken by the workshop facilitators and a demonstration of tools developed to aid mutual understanding. It will also provide a space for attendees to discuss and share their experiences of different ways of engaging with people about risk of harm. This workshop forms part of IRISS’s Evidence-informed Practice series. These events provide an opportunity to explore evidence and examine its implications for social services in Scotland. Who should attend? This event has been designed for those working in adult support and protection but all are welcome to attend.  The event is free, but there will be a charge applied if a place is reserved and not taken up. Workshop leaders: The workshop will be led by Kathryn Mackay (Lecturer in Social Work) and Beth Cross (Research Fellow) from the University of Stirling.

ScotSTAT data linkage CONFERENCE

Date: Monday 26 March 2012

Details: Data linkage is the joining of two or more administrative or survey datasets to greatly increase the power of analysis then possible with the data. This ScotStat conference is concerned exclusively with data linkage for research and statistical purposes and will cover a variety of topics including statistical methods for data linkage, models for linkage centres, individual referencing systems, alternatives to the census, privacy impact assessments and the Scottish Longitudinal Survey.

The full programme is not yet finalised but will include presentations from the following people: Graeme Laurie, Professor of Medical Jurisprudence in the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh and Chairman of the Privacy Advisory Committee for Scotland; Sarah Cunningham-Burley, Professor of Medical and Family Sociology in the Division of Community Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh; Ken Macdonald, Assistant Information Commissioner for Scotland and Northern Ireland; Susan McVie, Professor of Quantitative Criminology in the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh; Roger Halliday, Chief Statistician, Scottish Government; Janice McGhee, Senior Lecturer in Social Work in the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. The conference will run from 9am and close by 5pm. COSLA conference centre is 2 minutes walk from Haymarket Station. The Conference is open to members of ScotStat (preference will be given to non-Scottish Government members).  In the event that demand for places is greater than capacity we shall endeavour to ensure representation of  delegates from across topic areas, sectors and organisations. We will confirm your registration no later than Wednesday 29th February.
